Why a schedule exists at all

The body adapts to heat, and it adapts well. Within a fortnight of regular exposure, plasma volume rises, sweating begins earlier and at a higher rate, sweat carries less salt, and heart rate at a given workload falls. An acclimatised worker is measurably safer in the same conditions than they were two weeks earlier.

The problem is the gap before that happens. Analyses of fatal occupational heat illness keep finding the same pattern: a large share of deaths occur in a worker's first days on the job, and a substantial number on the very first day. Not because the first day is hotter, but because the worker arrives with none of the adaptation the job assumes.

A graded schedule is simply the decision to spend that fortnight deliberately instead of by accident.

Using the plan

Pick the track that fits, set your shift length, and the table gives hours per day.

  • New to the heat — a first job in hot conditions, a first hot spell of the year, or a worker with no recent heat exposure. Five steps, starting at a fifth of a normal shift.
  • Returning after a break — an experienced worker back after a week or more away. Four steps, starting at half.

Two rules travel with both tracks:

  1. The percentage is of time working in the heat, not of the working day. A worker can be on site all day and in the heat for 20% of it.
  2. Supervision does not scale down with the hours. NIOSH pairs this schedule with active monitoring — someone whose job is to notice the worker who has gone quiet.

What the schedule does not cover

It sets exposure time. It does not set work intensity, and it does not replace the work/rest limits: a new worker doing heavy work at WBGT 30°C is over the published limit whether they are there for eight hours or two.
