What adaptation actually is
Heat acclimatisation is not toughness and it is not tolerance in the psychological sense. It is a set of measurable physiological changes, and they arrive in a fairly reliable order.

The practical result is substantial. The same person in the same conditions doing the same work has a lower core temperature, a lower heart rate and a higher sweat rate after two weeks than on day one.
The two schedules
Occupational. NIOSH's graded schedule increases exposure in steps: a worker new to heat spends 20% of a normal shift in it on day one, adding no more than 20% a day and reaching full exposure on day five. An experienced worker returning after a break starts at 50%. Enter your own shift length in the plan builder to get hours rather than percentages.
Sport. A 14-day pre-season shape: limited single practices at first, restrictions on helmets and pads, and double sessions only after several single days, each double followed by a single. Different structure, same underlying physiology.
Both share one feature worth noticing: they front-load caution into the days when nothing has adapted yet.
How fast it goes
Faster than people plan for.
- Within a week away from heat, a measurable amount is lost.
- Within two to three weeks, most of it.
- A cool spell counts as time away. A crew that has been working in 22°C for ten days is not acclimatised to 33°C, whatever the calendar says about it being August.
This is why the first hot week after a mild stretch is a high-risk period even for a long-serving crew, and why the returning-worker track exists at all.
What it does not buy you
Acclimatisation shifts the published limits by a few degrees WBGT. It does not remove them, and it does nothing for the two failure modes that actually kill people: dehydration, and nobody noticing.
- Fluid balance is separate. An acclimatised worker sweats more, so the daily water requirement goes up, not down.
- Monitoring is separate. NIOSH pairs the schedule with supervision for exactly this reason.
- Individual variation is large. Fitness, body composition, medication, illness and sleep all move the line, and a schedule is a population-level tool.
