Test the ground with the back of your hand. Hold it against the surface for seven seconds. If you cannot keep it there, a dog cannot stand on it. Above roughly 125°F (52°C) asphalt can cause burns in under a minute, and paws have no shoes.

Is it too hot to walk my dog right now?

Judge it on the heat index rather than the temperature. Below about 24°C (75°F) heat index a normal walk is fine; from 27°C (80°F) keep it short and shaded; from 32°C (90°F) skip the walk and use grass for toilet breaks only. Flat-faced, elderly, overweight and thick-coated dogs cross every line earlier.

Why the heat index and not the temperature

A dog does not sweat. It cools by panting, which is evaporation happening across the tongue and airway instead of the skin. Evaporation slows as the air fills with moisture — so humidity limits a dog's cooling even more directly than it limits ours.

That is why the thermometer misleads. 30°C at 25% humidity gives a dog plenty of room to work with. 27°C at 80% humidity gives it very little, and the second day is the more dangerous one despite reading three degrees cooler.

A cool overcast morning after a hot day can still leave asphalt warm enough to matter. A hot dry afternoon on grass in shade may be fine for the paws and still be too much for a bulldog. The two do not move together, so check both.

What to do instead of the walk

Skipping a walk is not the same as skipping the day. A dog that has been indoors since dawn will be restless by evening, and restlessness gets people out at 3pm.

Move it, do not cancel it. Before 7am and after sunset are effectively different weather. The hottest part of the day explains why the evening is warmer than the same clock hour in the morning.
Swap distance for shade. A short sniffing walk on grass in shade tires a dog more than people expect.
Bring water and offer it before the dog asks. Panting loses water fast.
Watch for the early signs — heavy or noisy panting that does not settle, drooling more than usual, slowing, lagging, or lying down and not wanting to move. Those mean stop now, get to shade and cool water, and call a vet if the dog does not settle quickly.

Common questions

What temperature is too hot to walk a dog?

There is no single number, and the thermometer is the wrong input. A dry 30°C with a breeze in shade is safer than a humid 27°C in still air, because dogs cool by panting and panting depends on evaporation. Use the heat index: care from about 24°C, short walks only from 27°C, and no walk from about 32°C.

Which dogs are at risk earlier?

Flat-faced breeds — pugs, French and English bulldogs, boxers — because their airways make panting far less effective. Also elderly dogs, puppies, overweight dogs, thick double-coated breeds, black-coated dogs in sun, and any dog with heart or airway disease. For those, treat every threshold here as roughly one band stricter.

Is grass safe when the pavement is not?

Much safer. Grass in sun typically runs a few degrees above air temperature while asphalt can run 25°C or more above it, because grass is not a dark solid surface and it transpires. It does not remove the risk of overheating, which is about the air, but it removes the burn risk.

How do I check the ground without a thermometer?

Press the back of your hand flat against the surface and hold it for seven seconds. If you cannot keep it there for the full seven, it is too hot for paws. Do it where the dog will actually walk, in sun, not on the shaded step by the door.

Why does this show a range for the surface rather than one number?

Because nothing in any weather feed measures the ground. The figure is modelled from air temperature and sun height, and real surfaces vary enormously with colour, material, age and how long the sun has been on them. A range is honest; a single number would not be.
